Academic Franchising: A higher education institution (franchiser) from one country grants another institution (franchisee) in another country the right to offer the franchiser’s programs/qualifications in the franchisee’s host country, regardless of the students’ origin.
Articulation: Students studying for a sub-degree qualification in one country are guaranteed advanced entry into a degree program in another country if they achieve an agreed level of performance in their studies.
Branch Campus: A campus of a higher education institution from one country established in another country (host country) to offer its own educational programs/qualifications, regardless of the students’ origin or location.
International Branch Campuses: Higher education institutions located in a different country from the one that originated or operates them, with some physical presence in the host country. These campuses award at least one degree in the host country that is recognized in the country of the originating institution. They typically have local partner institutions and comply with the local laws and regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education.
International Extension Program: Faculty members from the awarding institution deliver courses at an institution in another country.
Joint, Double, or Dual Degrees: Joint degrees involve a partnership leading to a single degree awarded by two or more institutions, with jointly developed, delivered, and assessed programs. Double degrees involve a partnership leading to two degrees awarded by two institutions. These models overlap with twinning arrangements and may involve student mobility between countries.
Online, Blended, and Distance Learning: Education delivered across international borders, typically online but can also include other methods such as post or mobile phone. The online component can range from zero to 100%, with blended provisions including both online and face-to-face elements.
TNE Offshore Institution: An institution independent of the host country’s ministry or commission of education, belonging to the education system of another country in terms of organization and educational content.
Twinning Arrangements: Students study for a degree in two countries, starting in one and finishing in another.
Validation: Institution A agrees to award its own degree to students who complete a program from institution B in another country.

ACADEMIC FRANCHISING
ACADEMIC FRANCHISING. Is a collaborative arrangement between two educational institutions, where one institution (the franchisor) authorizes another (the franchisee) to deliver specific academic programs or courses under its brand and quality assurance guidelines. The franchisor typically provides the curriculum, assessment methods, and certification, while the franchisee handles the local delivery, teaching, and student support. This model allows institutions to expand their reach and offer their programs in new regions or countries, often providing students with access to internationally recognized qualifications.
ARTICULATION AGREEMENT
ARTICULATION AGREEMENT. Is a formal partnership between two educational institutions that allows students to transfer credits from one institution to another, usually from a community college or lower-tier university to a more advanced university. These agreements specify which courses or programs are eligible for transfer, ensuring that students who complete specified coursework at one institution can smoothly continue their education at another, often with advanced standing. Articulation agreements help streamline the educational pathway, saving students time and money by avoiding duplicate coursework.
BRANCH CAMPUS
BRANCH CAMPUS. Is a physical campus established by a university in a foreign country, allowing the institution to offer its academic programs and degrees directly to students in that location. IBCs maintain the academic standards, curriculum, and quality assurance of the home university, often bringing faculty from the main campus or hiring qualified local staff. Joint Degree: A single degree awarded by two or more institutions, indicating that the student has met the requirements of all involved universities through a combined program.
Double Degree: Two separate degrees awarded by partnering institutions, where the student fulfills the criteria for both degrees, often by completing an integrated curriculum that spans the institutions.
Dual Degree: Similar to a double degree, but typically involves two distinct programs of study that the student completes simultaneously or sequentially, earning degrees from each institution independently.

ONLINE, BLENDED and DISTANCE LEARNING

TNE OFFSHORE INSTITUTION
TNE OFFSHORE INSTITUTION. Is a foreign branch or entity established by a university or educational provider in another country to deliver its academic programs. This type of Transnational Education (TNE) institution operates as an extension of the parent university, offering degrees and qualifications from the home institution while adhering to both local regulations and the academic standards of the parent university. Offshore institutions enable students to access international education in their home country, providing the same curriculum, resources, and degree recognition as the main campus without the need to travel abroad.
TWINNING ARRANGEMENTS
TWINNING ARRANGEMENTS. Is a partnership between a home university and a foreign institution, allowing students to complete part of their degree program at the local (foreign) institution and the remainder at the home university. Typically, students spend the first one or two years at the partner institution and then transfer to the home university to complete their studies. This arrangement offers students the benefits of an international education while reducing costs and easing the transition to studying abroad. The final degree is awarded by the home university.
VALIDATION
VALIDATION. Is is a process where a university authorizes a foreign institution to deliver its academic programs, ensuring that the courses meet the standards and quality of the awarding university. The local institution provides the teaching and assessment, but the degree is awarded by the validating university. This arrangement allows students to earn a recognized degree from the validating university while studying at a partner institution in their home country. Validation ensures academic consistency and maintains the credibility of the awarded qualifications across borders.
